Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Midview Dam (also known as National ID # UT10126) is a large structure in Duchesne County, Utah. It sits about twelve miles east of the town of Duchesne. This dam helps manage water for the area.

Building the Midview Dam

The Midview Dam was built a long time ago, between 1935 and 1937. It was a big project during a time when many people needed jobs. The United States Bureau of Reclamation and the Civilian Conservation Corps worked together to construct it.

The dam is made of earth, meaning it's built from soil, rock, and clay. It stands 54 feet tall, which is about as high as a five-story building! The top of the dam stretches for 1901 feet, which is longer than five football fields.

Why Was It Built?

The Midview Dam is part of a larger system called the Moon Lake Project. Its main jobs are to control floods and provide water for irrigation. Irrigation means supplying water to farms so crops can grow, especially in dry areas.

Midview Lake: The Water It Holds

Behind the Midview Dam is a reservoir called Midview Lake. Some people also know it as Lake Boreham. This lake holds a lot of water!

When the lake is at its normal level, its surface covers about 402 acres. That's like 300 football fields! It can hold up to 5,785 acre-feet of water. An acre-foot is the amount of water needed to cover one acre of land with water one foot deep. That's a huge amount of water for farms and communities.

Who Manages the Dam?

The Midview Dam is owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation. However, a local group called the Moon Lake Water Users Association helps operate it. They make sure the dam works properly and that water is delivered to where it's needed.
