Midway is a small, unincorporated community in Woodbury County, Iowa, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Midway is located on County Highway D38. It's about 7.15 miles (11.5 km) east of Anthon.
A Look Back at Midway's Past
Midway was once a busy place with several important buildings and services. It had schools, a church, a post office, and various businesses. The post office in Midway served the community for many years, from 1890 until 1907.
St. Paul Lutheran Church
The St. Paul Lutheran Church of Midway has a long history. It was started on July 3, 1892, by seven families. They began holding their church services at the Midway District #2 school building.
The first church building for the congregation was built in 1898. By 1912, the church had grown quite a bit, with 582 members who had been baptized. In 1919, the original church building was hit by lightning. A new church was then built in 1920 to replace it. Later, in 1959, an even larger church building was constructed. St. Paul's of Midway celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017, marking many years of community service.
Midway's Schoolhouse
Midway also had its own school system, known as the Midway Independent School District. This school operated as a "one-room schoolhouse," meaning all grades learned together in a single classroom. The school was planned to close in 1963, but it continued to operate for a few more years and was still open in 1967.
