Miguel Villalba Hervás (1837–1899) was an important Spanish politician, lawyer, journalist, and historian. He was also a Mason, which is a member of a social and charitable organization. He was born on December 12, 1837, in La Orotava, Tenerife, which is one of the Canary Islands. He passed away in Madrid in 1899. Miguel Villalba Hervás was a key leader for the republican movement in Tenerife.

His Life and Work

In his younger years, Miguel Villalba Hervás worked as a librarian for the Society of La Esperanza in La Orotava. He also managed several newspapers in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Later, he moved to Madrid. There, he took over as the head of the La Justicia newspaper, replacing Nicolás Salmerón.

In September 1868, he joined the Revolutionary Council. This led to him being sent away to Gran Canaria.

In 1871, he was chosen to be a member of the Provincial Council. This council helps manage a province. During the time of the First Spanish Republic, in 1872, he worked as a civil governor in the Canary Islands. A civil governor is like a chief administrator for a region.

Even though he supported republican ideas, he later joined the "Restoration" period of Spanish politics. However, he often spoke out against problems like corruption in the system.

He was elected as a representative for Tenerife in 1881 and 1886. These elections happened when Sagasta was leading the government. After 1891, he became less involved in active politics. He focused more on being a lawyer and a journalist. During this time, he started writing a book about Spanish history. It covered the period from Queen Elizabeth II's reign and the wars in Cuba and the Philippines.

Miguel Villalba Hervás also played a big part in developing Freemasonry in the Canary Islands. He reached a high rank (grade 33) in the Scottish Ancient and Accepted Rite. He also became the Venerable Master of the Teide Lodge, which was the most important lodge in Tenerife at that time.
