In 1636, Miguel de Horna became the leader of a special Spanish navy group called the Armada of Flanders. This group was based in Dunkirk, a city now in France. The Armada of Flanders was very strong and effective. Its main job was to fight against Dutch trading ships.
His Important Battles
Miguel de Horna led his ships in several important battles. One famous fight was the Battle off Lizard Point in February 1637. In this battle, he sank three Dutch warships and captured 14 trading ships. He also fought in another battle on February 18, 1639.
Miguel de Horna was also present at the big Battle of the Downs in October 1639. This was a major naval battle. He was one of the few commanders who managed to get his ships through the fighting and safely back to Dunkirk. This showed his skill and bravery as a naval leader.
