Michael Ford, also known as the "Hip-Hop Architect," is an architect, designer, and teacher. He has spent years studying how hip-hop culture and building design can work together. Ford shows that architecture doesn't have to follow only old, traditional ideas.
His "hip-hop architecture" approach celebrates different cultures. It also encourages young people, especially those of color, to get involved in architecture. He wants them to think about the buildings and spaces around them. Michael Ford teaches architecture at Madison College. He also started his own design company called BrandNu Design.
Ford grew up in Detroit, Michigan.
Michael Ford's Education
Michael Ford earned his master's degree in architecture from the University of Detroit Mercy. For his final project, he wrote about "Hip Hop Inspired Architecture and Design."
Michael Ford's Career
Michael Ford believes that buildings and cities really affect people's lives. He noticed that these effects can be unfair for people of color. He saw that hip-hop music lets communities talk about their cities. It gives them a way to share their ideas and concerns about architecture.
To help with this, Ford helped create the Urban Arts Collective. Here, he started the Hip-Hop Architecture Camp. This is a free summer program for kids. It aims to make architecture studies more diverse. It also wants to bring more different people into the field. At the camp, kids explore rap and hip-hop songs about cities and buildings. They use their love for music to learn about design. They see how architecture and music connect.
Ford also designed the Bronx Hip Hop Museum, which opened in 2018. For this museum, he used a method he calls "design cyphers." These are like hip-hop rap battles or dance battles. They create a fun space for people to work together. Ford used these circles to help hip-hop artists, architecture students, and designers team up. This way, they built the museum's design from everyone's ideas.
Michael Ford's work on Hip Hop Architecture has been shared widely. You can find it in places like Oprah Winfrey Network, Rolling Stone Magazine, and NBC’s The TODAY Show. He has also given many important talks. In 2017, he was a main speaker at the AIA Conference on Architecture. He also gave a TEDx talk called “Hip Hop Architecture as Modernism’s Post Occupancy Evaluation.”
