Mikel Zalbide's Life Story

Mikel Zalbide was born in a city called San Sebastián. He went to the University of Navarra to study engineering. Even from a young age, he was very interested in the Basque language. He started working on projects to help Euskera develop and become stronger.

Developing the Basque Language

Mikel Zalbide has done a lot of important work to help organize and develop the Basque language.

Creating New Words and Dictionaries

In 1972, while he was still a student, Mikel helped start an organization called Elhuyar Kultur Elkartea. This group created the first science and technology magazine in Euskera. They also made learning materials and studied how new words are formed in the language.

Later, in 1978, he became a leader in science and technology at UZEI (Unibertsitate Zerbitzuetarako Euskal Institutua). Here, he worked on creating dictionaries for subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in Euskera. He also taught people about how new words are made. He helped set rules for how new words, especially those borrowed from other languages, should be written and pronounced in Basque.

Improving Basque Education

Mikel Zalbide played a big part in making sure Euskera was taught well in schools.

Planning for a Basque University

In 1979, Mikel helped plan for a new Basque University. He was part of a special group that worked on making sure the Basque language was used and taught correctly in higher education.

Working for the Government

From 1981, he worked for the Basque Government's Department of Education. He was in charge of the Euskera Service. He retired from this role in 2014. In this job, he helped create many important projects to teach Euskera and check how well people knew the language.

Educational Programs and Projects

Mikel was involved in several programs to improve education in Euskera:

  • EIMA program: This program created textbooks, videos, and software in Euskera for primary and secondary schools. It also made sure the language used in these materials was high quality.
  • NOLEGA and ULIBARRI projects: These projects aimed to encourage more use of Euskera in schools.
  • Plan for Euskaldunizar: This plan worked to make the educational system more Basque-friendly.

He also helped study how well students learned Euskera in different school models (A, B, and D) and suggested ways to make things better.

Contributions to the Royal Academy of the Basque Language

Mikel Zalbide became a member of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language, called Euskaltzaindia, in 1983. This is a very important organization for the Basque language.

Work on Words and Dictionaries

Before joining the Academy, in 1976, he was already helping with their mathematics subcommittee. At the Academy, he did a lot of work on words and dictionaries. He was part of the Lexicography Commission and the Jargon Section, often serving as their secretary.

He also led a group called LEF, which set rules for new words. This group worked on projects like deciding how to write words borrowed from other languages. They also worked on the Basque General Dictionary and the EEBS project, which collects current Basque language use.

Becoming a Full Member

On April 27, 2006, Mikel Zalbide became a full academic member of Euskaltzaindia. He gave a special speech in San Sebastian on June 2, 2007.

Studying Basque History

Currently, he is working on the Joanes Etxeberri project. This project, started in 2007, studies the social history of Euskera. It looks at how the Basque language has changed over time and how it has interacted with other languages.
