Mikkel Hansen (born October 22, 1987) is a Danish former professional handball player. He is known as one of the greatest handball players of all time.
Hansen won the IHF World Player of the Year award three times, which is a record. He mostly played as a left back. Towards the end of his career, he also played as a centre back, helping to set up plays for his team. In 2024, he was honored by being added to the EHF Hall of Fame.

Mikkel Hansen's Handball Journey
Mikkel Hansen started his professional handball career in Denmark. He played for GOG Håndbold and helped them win the Danish championship in 2007.
In 2008, he moved to Spain to play for FC Barcelona Handbol. After two years, he returned to Denmark to join AG København. With this club, he won two more Danish championships.
When AG København closed in 2012, Hansen moved to France. He joined the new team PSG Handball. He played for PSG for ten seasons, winning many titles. After his time in France, he returned to Denmark to play for Aalborg Håndbold.
Mikkel Hansen retired from handball in the summer of 2024.
Success with the Danish National Team
Mikkel Hansen was a key player for the Danish national team. He helped them win many important tournaments:
- He won a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
- He won gold medals at the World Championships in 2019, 2021, and 2023.
- He won a gold medal at the European Championship in 2012.
He was also part of the Danish team that won silver medals at the World Championships in 2011 and 2013. In 2011, he was the top goal scorer at the World Championships.
In 2019, when Denmark won their first-ever World Championship, Hansen was the top scorer and named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. He won the World Player of the Year award for the third time that same year.
At the 2020 Olympics (which took place in 2021), Denmark won a silver medal. Hansen was again chosen as the best left back and was the top goal scorer with 61 goals. He broke the record for the most goals scored in a single men's Olympic handball tournament. During that tournament, he also became the all-time top goal scorer in men's Olympic handball, with a total of 165 goals.
In 2024, he won another Olympic gold medal with Denmark at the Paris Olympics.
Mikkel Hansen's Family Life
Mikkel Hansen's father, Flemming Hansen, was also a handball player. His father played 120 matches for the Danish national team and even participated in the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Mikkel Hansen married Stephanie Gundelach in 2020. They have two sons. Their first son, Eddie Max, was born in January 2019. Their second son, Vince, was born in May 2021.
