Milan "Mimi" Bolden-Morris is an amazing athlete and coach! She played basketball for the Boston College Eagles and Georgetown Hoyas. Later, she made history as a graduate assistant football coach for the Michigan Wolverines.
Mimi's Early Life and School Days
Mimi Bolden-Morris grew up in Belle Glade, Florida. She went to Cardinal Newman High School. Her dad, Michael, is a police officer, and her mom, Melanie, is a high school principal. Mimi was a great student and was even the president of her school's National Honor Society.
When she was younger, Mimi loved playing sports. She played baseball, softball, and flag football.
College Basketball Star
Mimi first went to Boston College. She played basketball there for three and a half years. She earned her first degree in communication.
After Boston College, Mimi moved to Georgetown University. She continued playing basketball there for a year and a half. As a guard, she was a top scorer for the Georgetown women's basketball team. She scored 12.6 points per game and made 83 three-point shots! Mimi was also a fantastic student at Georgetown, winning the Most Outstanding Student Award.
She earned a master's degree from Georgetown in sports industry management. She later pursued another master's degree in public policy at the University of Michigan.
Coaching Football History
In March 2022, the Michigan Wolverines football team hired Mimi Bolden-Morris. She became a graduate assistant coach, working with the quarterbacks. This was a very important step because she was one of the first women to hold such a position in a major college football program!
Michigan's football coach, Jim Harbaugh, said Mimi was "bright, intelligent and competitive." He believed she would be a great addition to the team. Mimi started her coaching job in June 2022.
Mimi was very excited about this opportunity. She said it was an "absolute honor" to be the first female graduate assistant in the Power Five and the Big Ten. She mentioned that these chances for Black women had been rare until recently. Mimi had always dreamed of being part of a football team, like her dad who coached her brother. She felt that basketball guards and football quarterbacks are similar. Both need to make quick decisions, understand defenses, and handle the ball well.
Mimi's first game as an assistant coach was on September 3, 2022. Michigan won against the Colorado State Rams with a score of 51-7.
Her younger brother, Mike Morris, was also on the 2022 team as a defensive end.
Mimi Bolden-Morris is believed to be the first female graduate assistant football coach at a Power Five school since the 1980s. She is also the first ever in the Big Ten conference. This makes her a true pioneer in college football!
