What Was Hadrian's Wall?
Hadrian's Wall was a huge stone wall built by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago. It stretched across northern England from coast to coast. The wall was built to protect the Roman lands from tribes to the north. It was a very important border for the Roman Empire.
What Are Milecastles?
Along Hadrian's Wall, the Romans built small forts called milecastles. These were like mini-forts placed about one Roman mile apart. Each milecastle had a small group of Roman soldiers. Their job was to guard the wall and control who passed through gates.
The Mystery of Milecastle 67
Milecastle 67 is a bit of a puzzle! We know where it should be based on the distance from other milecastles. But archaeologists haven't found its actual remains yet. It's like a missing piece of a giant Roman jigsaw puzzle.
In 1861, workers were digging a railway line nearby. They found some Roman coins in the ground. This discovery hints that Romans were definitely in the area. These coins are one of the few clues we have about Milecastle 67.
Searching for Turrets 67A and 67B
Every milecastle on Hadrian's Wall had two smaller guard posts called turrets. These turrets were placed between milecastles. They helped the soldiers keep an eye on the wall. The turrets linked to Milecastle 67 are named Turret 67A and Turret 67B. Just like the milecastle itself, no clear evidence of these turrets has been found yet. The search for these Roman structures continues!
