The Milk Bottle Grocery is a super cool building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. What makes it special? It has a giant metal milk bottle right on its roof! This unique grocery store was built in 1930. The big milk bottle was added later, in 1948.
The bottle was put there to catch people's eye. It was tall enough to be seen by cars driving along Classen Boulevard. This road was once part of the famous U.S. Route 66. The bottle also helped advertise milk and dairy products.
A Unique Building
The Milk Bottle Grocery is one of the few buildings in Oklahoma City shaped like a triangle. It sits on a corner where Classen Boulevard cuts across the city's streets at an angle. Because of its unusual shape, the store was first called the Triangle Grocery. This name lasted from 1940 until 1948.
When the huge milk bottle was placed on the roof in 1948, the store got its new name: the Milk Bottle Grocery. This name stuck because of its awesome new rooftop decoration!
Its History
On March 5, 1998, the Milk Bottle Grocery building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site that should be protected.
For several years, a Vietnamese sandwich shop called Saigon Baguette was located in the building. In August 2014, there was exciting news! Plans were announced to restore the building. The goal was to make it look like it did when it was first built.
