Milena "Milka" Babović (born October 27, 1928 – died December 26, 2020) was a famous Croatian athlete and journalist. She was known for her speed in running and hurdles. Milka won many races in the country that was once called Yugoslavia. She was also chosen as the best athlete several times. Later, she had a successful career as a sports journalist and editor on television.
Early Life and Education
Milka Babović was born in Skopje. Her father was from Montenegro, and her mother was German from the Syrmia region. She grew up in Sarajevo. Later, she moved to Ruma and Belgrade during her high school years. Milka studied pedagogy at the University of Zagreb. This is a field focused on teaching and education.
A Star Athlete
Milka started playing sports in Ruma. When she moved to Zagreb, she joined the Mladost sports club. There, she began competing in sprinting events. These are short, fast races.
Starting in 1953, Milka won many national titles in Yugoslavia. She won the 100-meter race once. She was a champion in the 80-meter hurdles seven times. She also won the 4 × 100-meter relay seven times. In the 4 × 200-meter relay, she won twice.
Milka set several new records for sprinting in Yugoslavia. She also won two international student competitions. These wins were in the 80-meter hurdles in 1953 and 1957. At the 1954 European Athletics Championships, she finished in fifth place. Her amazing talent was recognized. She was voted the best female athlete in Croatia three times. She was also named the best female athlete in Yugoslavia twice.
Career in Journalism
Milka Babović started her career as a sports journalist in 1949. She wrote for a newspaper called Narodni sport. In 1957, she moved to TV Zagreb. This was a big step in her career. She became the first sports editor at the TV station. She held this important job for many years, almost without interruption until 1975.
Milka was also a leader in her field. She was the president of the sports journalist section of the Croatian Journalist Association many times. She was also a member of the Yugoslav Olympic Committee for two terms. This shows her dedication to sports, both as an athlete and a journalist.
Awards and Later Life
Milka Babović received several awards for her work. In 1974, she was honored by the Journalist Association. The City of Zagreb gave her an award in 1977. In 1979, she received the Yugoslav Order of Brotherhood and Unity. This award recognized her contributions to society.
Milka Babović passed away on December 26, 2020. She was 92 years old.
