Millard is a neighborhood located in southwest Omaha, Nebraska. It used to be a separate town. The original downtown area, often called 'Old Millard,' is found near the intersection of Millard Avenue and L Street.

History of Millard
Millard was started in 1870 by a person named Ezra Millard, and the town was named after him. A post office opened in Millard in 1873 and stayed open until 1967. Millard officially became a town in 1885.
Becoming Part of Omaha
After many legal battles, the city of Omaha took over Millard in 1971. This process is called "annexation," which means Millard became a part of the larger city of Omaha.
There were also attempts to make Millard's schools part of the Omaha Public Schools. However, the Millard Public Schools system managed to stay independent. More recently, these schools have been included under the taxing authority of the Learning Community. This helps to extend Omaha's tax base.
Millard Public Schools
The Millard Public Schools system is quite large. It includes 25 elementary schools, six middle schools, and four high schools. Many students who live outside the usual attendance areas choose to go to Millard Public Schools.
Special Programs
Some schools in the Millard system offer special programs. For example, Aldrich Elementary and Black Elk Elementary are IB elementary schools. North Middle and North High are also IB schools. The IB program is a special way of learning that focuses on critical thinking and global awareness.

Location of Millard
Millard is generally located around 144th Street and L Street in Omaha. You can often spot the Millard water tower at 144th Street and Q Street. The area extends roughly to 204th Street on the west side and 108th Street on the east side. To the north, it reaches Blondo Street, and to the south, it goes to Harrison Street.
