Millerand Island is a high, rocky island about 6 kilometers (or 3 nautical miles) wide. It lies about 7 kilometers (or 4 nautical miles) south of Cape Calmette. This island is located off the west coast of Graham Land in Antarctica.

A French team exploring Antarctica discovered Millerand Island between 1908 and 1910. This group was called the French Antarctic Expedition, and it was led by Jean-Baptiste Charcot. At first, they thought the island was a cape, which is a piece of land sticking out into the sea. They named it after Alexandre Millerand, who was an important French leader at the time.

About 17 de Agosto Refuge

What is a Refuge?

A refuge is like a small, safe shelter in a remote area. The Refuge 17 de Agosto 68°07′53″S 67°10′16″W / 68.131254°S 67.171031°W / -68.131254; -67.171031 is located on the northeast side of Millerand Island. It is in a place called Marguerite Bay, along the Fallières Coast.

Who Uses the Refuge?

The Argentine Army operates this refuge. It was opened on August 17, 1957. The refuge helps people working on missions in the area. It is connected to the San Martín base, which is about five kilometers away on Barry Island.

Inside the Refuge

The refuge is a red hut. It can house up to four people. It has enough food for two weeks, along with fuel, gas, and a first aid kit. This makes it a useful spot for researchers and explorers in the Antarctic.

Island Geology

Geology is the study of Earth's physical structure and substances. Millerand Island was studied by a British geologist named Keith Hoskins. He mapped the island's geology in 1958 and 1959. Hoskins was based on nearby Stonington Island.
