The Millersburg Christian Church was a historic church building located in Millersburg, Ohio. It was a part of the Disciples of Christ Christian faith. The church stood at 100 North Clay Street and was an important part of the community's history for many years.

The very first church building on this spot was made of wood and built around 1859. Later, a much larger brick building was constructed between 1903 and 1904. This newer building was recognized for its historical importance and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Sadly, due to high maintenance costs, the building was taken down in April 2024.

How the Church Began

The story of the Millersburg Christian Church started in 1852. On April 26, 1852, a group of people who followed the Disciples of Christ faith met at the courthouse in Millersburg. They decided to officially form a church in the town.

During that meeting, they chose their first leaders. John Albertson was elected as the elder, and Jacob Vorhes and William J. Courtney became deacons. Malvina Wolgamot and Sarah Mayers were chosen as deaconesses, and Samuel Appleton became the clerk. These people, along with others, became the first members of the new church.

A few days later, on May 1, 1852, the church leaders met again. They elected John Albertson, Jacob Vorhes, and William J. Courtney as trustees. These trustees were in charge of the church's property and finances.

Building the First Church

After organizing the church, the members started thinking about building their own church home. In May 1857, they all agreed that it was time to construct a building.

The first wood-frame church building was completed around 1858 or 1859. This building served the congregation for many years. In 1890, it was completely updated and remodeled. The newly improved building was dedicated on January 11, 1891.

The Grand New Building

As the church grew, the congregation decided they needed an even bigger and more modern building. Construction on the current brick church began in 1903 and was finished in 1904. The new building was officially dedicated on August 21, 1904.

The total cost to build this impressive structure was about $8,433.18. The community worked together to raise money, and by the dedication day, they had collected enough to pay off the entire debt. This meant the church started its new chapter on a strong financial footing.

What the Building Looked Like

The Millersburg Christian Church was designed in a style called Victorian Gothic. It was built with tan bricks that had different colors, giving it a unique look. The building had an L-shaped layout.

The outside of the church had special details like dark brownstone window sills and brick decorations above the windows. The walls featured beautiful stained glass windows, often in pairs. On the southwest corner, there was a tall bell tower with a pointed roof, which served as the main entrance.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its unique architecture and its role in the community's history, the Millersburg Christian Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 17, 1984. This listing recognized the building as an important historical site.

The Church's Final Chapter

After more than a century of standing tall, the Millersburg Christian Church building faced challenges. The costs to maintain and repair the old structure became too high. In April 2024, the difficult decision was made to demolish the building. While the physical structure is gone, its history and the memories it holds remain a part of Millersburg's heritage.
