Millfield Wood is a special natural area covering 9.5 hectares (about 23 acres) in Buckinghamshire, north of High Wycombe. It's officially known as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of its unique plants and animals. This means it's a very important place for nature in the UK.

The Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust owns and looks after Millfield Wood. It's also part of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is a protected landscape known for its beautiful scenery.

What Makes Millfield Wood Special?

Millfield Wood is a very old forest. It was even owned by a famous former Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli, in the late 1800s. The trees here have been growing for a very long time, making it a "semi-natural" woodland. This means it has developed mostly on its own, without much human interference.

A Rare Forest Type

The wood is mostly made up of beech trees growing on chalky soil. This kind of forest is quite rare and special. It also has many wych elm trees.

Amazing Plants and Flowers

Even though it's a beech woodland, Millfield Wood has a surprisingly rich variety of plants growing on the ground. These include some very old woodland species and other plants that are rare in the UK. You can find many beautiful wild flowers here, which is unusual for a beech forest.

Wildlife Living in the Wood

Millfield Wood is home to many different animals. You can find several badger setts, which are underground homes for badgers. The wood also has a wide range of invertebrates, which are small creatures like insects and spiders.

Birds are also common visitors. You might spot great spotted woodpeckers tapping on trees or hear the cheerful song of chiffchaffs.

How to Visit Millfield Wood

You can explore Millfield Wood by following a public footpath. The path starts from White Hill, making it easy to access and enjoy this special natural area.
