A School with History
The Millwood Colored School was an important part of the community. It provided education for African-American students in Clarke County, Virginia. This was a time when many schools were segregated. This means that Black and white students went to separate schools. The Millwood Colored School helped many children learn and grow.
What the School Looked Like
The school building is one story tall. It has a special roof shape called a hip-roof. Inside, there were two main rooms for classes. There were also small closets for coats and a kitchen area. The building is about 60 feet long and 30 feet wide.
The school has some cool features. It has an entrance that is set back a bit from the front. There are two doors to enter the building. The roof edges hang over a little, and you can see the decorative ends of the wooden beams. The windows have two panes that slide up and down, and they have wooden designs. The doors inside have five panels. The whole building sits on a strong foundation made of limestone.
From School to Community Center
The Millwood Colored School was used as an elementary school for many years. It taught children until 1952. After that, the building was sold to a group called the Millwood Good Will Association. This group turned the old school into a community center. It became a place where people could gather for meetings, events, and other community activities. It continues to serve the community today.
A Place on the National Register
Because of its important history, the Millwood Colored School was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Being on this list helps protect the building and recognize its value. It reminds us of the past and the journey of education for all children.
