Milton is a small, quiet place in Randolph County, Missouri. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. For a while, it was also known by another name: "Firth."
The Story of Milton
How Milton Started
Milton was first planned out in 1836. It was named after Milton, North Carolina. This was the hometown of one of the very first people to settle here.
Mail and Post Offices
A post office, where people could send and receive mail, opened in Milton in 1840. It closed for a short time in 1872. When it reopened, its name was changed. This was to prevent confusion with another place called Milton, Atchison County, Missouri.
Later, in 1883, a new post office opened with the name "Firth." This "Firth" post office stayed open until 1902, when it finally closed for good.
School Days
Milton used to have its own school building. This school is no longer in use today.
