Mimi Gross's Early Life
Mimi Gross was born in New York City in 1940. Her father, Chaim Gross, was a famous sculptor. She grew up in a part of Manhattan called the Upper West Side. Her home was often filled with artists. These artists were friends with her parents. Some of them included Raphael Soyer and Max Weber. From 1963 to 1976, Mimi was married to artist Red Grooms. They often worked on art projects together.
Her Amazing Art Career
Mimi Gross creates many kinds of art. She makes paintings and drawings. She also works on films and designs books. Mimi has even designed costumes and sets for performances. Her art includes large installations, both indoors and outside. She also makes dioramas and sculptures. Mimi Gross is especially known for using oil crayons and chalk pastels. She also uses oil paints in her artwork.
Exhibitions and Shows
Mimi Gross started showing her art in 1957. This was in Provincetown, MA, a town where many artists spent their summers. She had a show with two other women artists in 1958. Later, in 1997, she had her own show there. She has had many solo shows in galleries in Provincetown.
Big 3-D Artworks
Mimi Gross became well known for her large 3-D artworks. She created these with her husband, Red Grooms. These big art pieces were like giant sculptures. Some famous ones include City of Chicago (1967–68). Another was Discount Store (1970–71). They also made Astronauts on the Moon (1972). One of their biggest was Ruckus Manhattan (1975–76).
Working with Others
Mimi Gross has also worked with other artists. She has often collaborated with Douglas Dunn. He is a choreographer, which means he creates dances. Their first project together was Foot Rules in 1978. More recently, they worked on tanks under trees in 2008. This project included words by Anne Waldman. In 2012, they created Cassations.
Teaching Art
Mimi Gross also shares her art knowledge. She teaches at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). In 2010 and 2011, she held a special teaching position there. It was called the McMillan/Stewart Chair in Painting.
