The Mimungkum people spoke a special version, or dialect, of the Wik Mungkan language. This language is part of a larger group of languages spoken by the Wik peoples in that area.
Mimungkum Country
The Mimungkum lived in a small area of land. Their territory was about 80 square miles (207 square kilometers) in size. This land was located about 12 miles (19 km) inland from a place called Cape Keerweer. This cape is on the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Their country also included parts of the Kendall River.
About the Mimungkum People
The Mimungkum are considered to be one of the Wik peoples. The Wik peoples are a large group of Aboriginal communities who share similar cultures and languages. The Mimungkum's own name for themselves, in their Wik language, was not fully recorded by researchers. However, some people believe they might be the same group as a tribe known as the Wikmumin, who were also mentioned in that area.
