The State University of Minas Gerais (its name in Portuguese is Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais, or UEMG) is a public university in Brazil. A public university means it is supported by the government. It is the third largest university in the state of Minas Gerais. Only two other universities are bigger: the Federal University of Minas Gerais and the Federal University of Uberlândia. UEMG was started in 1989 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It has campuses in many different cities across Minas Gerais.
How UEMG Started
UEMG was created in 1989. This happened because of a rule in the Minas Gerais state constitution. This rule allowed different schools to work together. It also allowed them to become part of UEMG. These schools were focused on higher education, which means learning beyond high school.
Many schools joined UEMG. These included:
- Fundação Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Carangola
- Fundação Educacional do Vale do Jequitinhonha
- Fundação de Ensino Superior de Passos Visite o Portal FESP
- Fundação Educacional de Lavras
- Fundação de Ensino e Pesquisa do Sul de Minas
- Fundação Educacional de Divinópolis
- Fundação Educacional de Patos de Minas
- Fundação Educacional de Ituiutaba
- Fundação Cultural Campanha da Princesa
Other public schools also became part of UEMG. These were:
