The State University of Minas Gerais (in Portuguese, Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais), also known as UEMG, is a large public university in Brazil. A public university is funded by the government, which helps make education more affordable for students.

UEMG is the third-largest university in the state of Minas Gerais. It is smaller only than the Federal University of Minas Gerais and the Federal University of Uberlândia. The university was started in 1989. Its main campus is in the city of Belo Horizonte, but it has buildings in many other cities across the state.

History of the University

The idea for UEMG came from the state constitution of Minas Gerais in 1989. The plan was to bring together several smaller, independent colleges and schools that were run by the state government. By joining forces, they could create one large, strong university.

Schools That Formed UEMG

Before UEMG existed, there were many separate educational institutions. These schools, called "Fundações" (Foundations), focused on different subjects like philosophy, science, and art. Some of the key institutions that were absorbed into UEMG or worked with it were:

  • The college of philosophy, sciences, and letters in Carangola
  • Educational foundations in places like Jequitinhonha, Passos, and Lavras
  • Art schools like the Fundação Mineira de Arte Aleijadinho (FUMA)

By combining these schools, UEMG was able to offer a wide variety of courses to students all over the state of Minas Gerais.

Carangola
The city of Carangola is home to one of UEMG's campuses.
