Mingus Ulysses Mapps, born on April 9, 1968, is an American politician and former professor from Portland, Oregon. He was elected to the Portland City Council in November 2020. He won with 56% of the votes. As of September 2023, he was in charge of important city departments. These included the Water Bureau, the Bureau of Environmental Services, and the Bureau of Transportation (PBOT).
Education and Learning
Mingus Mapps went to Reed College and earned his first degree there. Later, he received his Ph.D. (a high-level degree) in government from Cornell University.
Political Career
Before becoming a politician, Mapps was a professor who taught about government. During his election campaign, he made several promises to the people of Portland. He wanted to make changes to the city's police department. He also aimed to create rules that would help protect people who rent their homes.
Mapps also promised to expand "Portland Street Response." These are special teams that help people experiencing homelessness or mental health crises. He wanted these teams to be available in all parts of the city. He also aimed to provide more funding for mental health services. Mingus Mapps is the third Black man to serve as a city commissioner in Portland.
In July 2023, Mapps announced that he would run for mayor of Portland. The election for mayor took place in November 2024.
