Mini CD facts for kids

A Mini CD is a type of Compact disc (CD) that is smaller than a regular CD. Most Mini CDs are 8 centimeters (about 3.1 inches) wide. Regular CDs are usually 12 centimeters (about 4.7 inches) wide. Because they are smaller, Mini CDs can hold less data or music.

What is a Mini CD?
Mini CDs are just like regular CDs, but in a smaller size. They work in most CD players and computer drives. You might find them used for things that don't need a lot of storage space. For example, they are often used for device drivers. These are small programs that help your computer talk to new hardware.
Different Sizes and Shapes
The most common Mini CD is round and 8 cm across. This is smaller than the standard 12 cm CD you usually see. Some Mini CDs are even shaped like a business card. These are often called "business card CDs." They are very small and can fit easily into a wallet.
How Much Can They Hold?
Mini CDs can store different amounts of information.
- A common 8 cm Mini CD can hold about 210 Megabytes (MB) of data. This is enough for about 24 minutes of music.
- Another version of the 8 cm Mini CD holds 155 MB of data. This is enough for about 18 minutes of music.
- The business card-shaped Mini CDs hold even less. They can store between 10 MB and 100 MB of data. This is usually enough for a small presentation or contact information.
