The Minister of the Armed Forces (in French, Ministre des Armées) is a very important job in the French government. This person is the main leader of the Ministry of the Armed Forces. Their main task is to manage and oversee the entire French Armed Forces.

This minister is one of the top civilian leaders in charge of France's military. Only the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister have more authority. Sometimes, another minister or state secretary helps with matters concerning veterans.

This role is seen as one of the most important positions in the Government of France. As of May 20, 2022, Sébastien Lecornu holds this position. He is the 45th person to be the Minister of the Armed Forces.

A Look Back at the Minister's Role

The role of the minister in charge of the Armed Forces has changed a lot over time. In 1589, France created a position called the Secretary of State of War. This person was responsible for the French Army. A similar role for the navy, the Naval Ministers of France and the Colonies, was created in 1669.

In 1791, the Secretary of State of War became the Minister of War. This job was briefly stopped in 1794 but brought back in 1795. After 1930, the position was often called Minister of War and National Defence.

After World War II in 1947, the Ministry of War joined with the Ministry of the Navy and the Ministry of Air. From then until 2017, the leader of this combined ministry was called the Minister of Defence. Now, it is known as the Minister of the Armed Forces.

What the Minister Does

As the head of the military, the Minister of the Armed Forces is part of the Council of Defence. This council makes important decisions about France's defence. The minister also leads France's foreign and military intelligence groups. Because of this, they are also a member of the National Council of Intelligence.

Even though the Minister of the Armed Forces is officially in charge of veterans' affairs, they usually let a special minister or state secretary handle these duties.

The main military leaders who report directly to the minister are:

  • The Chief of the Defence Staff
  • The Delegate General for Armament
  • The Secretary General for Administration
