The Ministry of Culture (Greek: Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού) is a special part of the Greek government. Its main job is to protect Greece's amazing cultural heritage. This means looking after ancient ruins, historical sites, and traditional arts. The Ministry also helps promote new art, music, and theater. Plus, it oversees sports through a special department. The person in charge right now is Minister Lina Mendoni.
History of the Ministry
The Ministry of Culture has changed its name and duties many times over the years. It first started in 1971. Back then, it was called the Ministry of Culture and Sciences. This name lasted until 1985, when it became simply the Ministry of Culture.
Later, in 2009, it joined with the Ministry of Touristic Development. Together, they formed the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. This new ministry worked to link Greece's rich culture with its popular tourism industry.
However, this combined ministry didn't last long. In 2012, the Ministry of Tourism became separate again. The culture part then joined with the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs. This created a very big ministry that handled education, religion, culture, and sports all at once!
But things changed again. In 2013, the Ministry of Culture and Sports was re-established as its own separate body. Then, in 2015, it briefly merged with education once more. Finally, on September 23, 2015, culture and education became separate ministries again. This means the Ministry of Culture now focuses mainly on cultural heritage, arts, and sports.
