The Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change (in Turkish: Çevre, Şehircilik ve İklim Değişikliği Bakanlığı) is a government group in Turkey. Its main job is to protect the environment, plan cities, and deal with climate change across the country. The current leader of this ministry is Murat Kurum.

History of the Ministry

This ministry was created in 1983. It was formed by joining two older ministries: the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Development and Housing. At first, it was called the Ministry of Public Works and Housing.

In 2011, its name changed to the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation. Later, in 2021, the words "Climate Change" were added to its name. This shows how important dealing with climate change has become.

How the Ministry Works

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change is led by a Minister. The President of Turkey chooses this Minister. The ministry has many different teams and departments.

These teams work on various tasks. Some examples include managing the environment, checking how new projects affect nature, planning how cities grow, and teaching people about environmental issues. There is also a special team focused on climate change.

What the Ministry Does

The ministry has important jobs related to the environment and cities in Turkey. It works to solve environmental issues in Turkey and fight climate change in Turkey.

One of its key roles is making sure buildings are safe. After the big 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquake in 2023, the President decided that this ministry would be the only group in charge of building new homes in the areas affected by the earthquake. This helps make sure new buildings are strong and safe for people.

The ministry also works to set up new agencies. For example, a National Environment Agency was planned in 2020 to help with environmental protection.
