Mipo O (吳美保, O Mipo, Korean: 오미보, born March 3, 1977, in Iga, Mie, Japan) is a talented Japanese-born Korean film director, screenwriter, and commercial director. Her name is also sometimes spelled Mipo Oh. She creates movies, writes scripts, and directs commercials.
About Mipo O's Career
After finishing her studies at the Osaka University of Arts, Mipo O started her career. She began writing screenplays for director Nobuhiko Obayashi. A screenwriter is someone who writes the story and dialogue for films.
Soon, she started directing her own films. Her short film Eye won an award in 2002. Another short film, Grandmother, also won a top prize. These early successes showed her talent.
In 2005, Mipo O wrote her first full-length movie script. It was called The Sakai’s Happiness. This script won a special international award. The next year, she directed the movie based on her own script.
In 2010, she wrote and directed Here Comes the Bride, My Mom!. This film was shown at the Busan International Film Festival. It also won a major award for promising new directors in Japan.
Mipo O won the best director award at the Montreal World Film Festival for her movie The Light Shines Only There. This film was also considered to represent Japan at the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. Her next film, You Are a Good Kid, was released in 2015. She worked with the same team from The Light Shines Only There on this movie.
Besides movies, Mipo O also directs commercials. She also directs episodes for television shows.
