Mipo O (born March 3, 1977, in Iga, Mie, Japan) is a talented Japanese-born Korean film director, screenwriter, and commercial director. She is also known as Mipo Oh. She creates movies and writes stories for them, and she also directs commercials for TV.

Becoming a Filmmaker
Mipo O studied at the Osaka University of Arts in a department focused on visual ideas. After finishing her studies, she started her career as a screenwriter, writing movie scripts for director Nobuhiko Obayashi.
Soon, she began directing her own films. Her third short film, Eye, won an award at the Short Shorts Film Festival in 2002. Another short film she directed, Grandmother, won the top prize in the Digital Shorts category at the Tokyo International Fantastic Film Festival.
First Feature Films
In 2005, Mipo O wrote her first full-length movie script called The Sakai’s Happiness. This script won a special award called the Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Award. The very next year, she directed her first full-length movie based on that script.
In 2010, she wrote and directed Here Comes the Bride, My Mom!. This film was shown at the Busan International Film Festival. It also won the grand prize at the Kaneto Shindo Awards, which are given to promising new directors by Japanese movie producers.
Award-Winning Work
Mipo O won the best director award at the Montreal World Film Festival for her film The Light Shines Only There. This movie was also chosen to represent Japan for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.
Her film You Are a Good Kid was released in 2015. For this movie, she worked again with the same producer and screenwriter from The Light Shines Only There. Besides making movies, Mipo O also writes and directs commercials and episodes for television shows.
