Miquel Navarro (born September 29, 1945) is a famous Spanish artist. He is known for his sculptures and paintings. He also writes poetry.
Navarro is considered an eclectic artist. This means he uses ideas from many different art styles. These styles include postmodernism, minimalism, and avant-garde art.
Biography
Miquel Navarro was born in Mislata, a town near Valencia, Spain, in 1945. From 1964 to 1968, he studied painting. He went to the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia.
In 1972, Navarro decided to focus on sculpture. But he still continued to paint and write poetry.
In 1973, Navarro showed his first "Ciutat" (which means "City"). These "cities" became a very important part of his art. He often used materials like fireproof clay, terracotta, and sand for these sculptures.
Between 1975 and 1980, he showed many of his main artworks. These included "Pirámide" (Pyramid) and "Els altres 75 anys de pintura valenciana". He had exhibitions in Valencia and Madrid.
In 1980, Navarro's sculptures were shown in the United States. They were part of a big sculpture conference in Washington, D.C. His art was also displayed at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
In the following years, Navarro created more important sculptures. These included "Estructura urbana" (1983), "Des del terrar" (1985–1986), and "Minerva Paranoica" (1989). "Minerva Paranoica" was a very large sculpture. Many of his newer sculptures started to include iron.
More recently, Navarro has shown his art in Bilbao (2005) and Valencia (2009). Some of his later sculptures are "Ciudad Roja" (1994), "Casco Urbano" (1999), and "L'Almassil" (2010).
His Artworks
Miquel Navarro takes ideas from many different art styles. These range from the old Baroque style to modern Postmodernism and Minimalism.
One of his most famous ideas is the "Ciutat" (city). Navarro sees a city like a living body. He explains that a city has "arteries" (like roads) and "walls" or "towers" (like vertical elements). He believes that when you describe a city, you are describing a body.
Some of Navarro's artworks are part of major art collections. For example, you can find his sculptures at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City.
