Story of Justin Yoder
The movie is based on the real-life story of Justin Yoder. He was the first person with a disability to compete in the All American Soapbox Derby.
Justin's Challenges
Justin Yoder (Frankie Muniz) is 12 years old. He was born with spina bifida (a condition affecting the spine) and hydrocephalus (extra fluid in the brain). Because of this, Justin uses a wheelchair. He lives with his parents and his brother, Seth (Patrick Levis), who is an athlete.
Justin really wants to win a trophy of his own. He cannot play sports because of his disability. For guidance, he often talks to God, who appears to him as a famous race car driver named Bobby Wade (Tuc Watkins).
Seeking a Trophy
Justin tries to join a summer baseball league but is not allowed because of his disability. He then enters a chess tournament. Even though he is put in a younger age group, he still loses the game.
Feeling disappointed, Justin goes to a car show. There, he meets his neighbor, Vic Sauder (Roger Aaron Brown), who has a cool vintage Corvette. Justin helps Vic win a prize for his car. In return, Vic promises Justin the trophy.
An Unexpected Friendship
Vic tries to deliver the trophy, but Justin is not home. Justin later visits Vic's house. He goes into the garage and tries to get the trophy from a high shelf. The shelf falls, damaging Vic's valuable Corvette.
As punishment, Justin helps Vic clean the garage. During this time, they become good friends. Vic warns Justin to stay away from a shed on his property. But Justin looks inside and sees many trophies and a soapbox racer. He finds a projector and watches a film of a young girl racing a soapbox car. Vic catches him and tells him to leave.
Building the Racer
Justin and Vic make up. They go to a soapbox race together. After this, Justin, his father, and Vic decide to build their own soapbox racer. To help Justin, they create a special handbrake called the "Justin Brake."
Meanwhile, Justin's brother, Seth, feels left out. Their father misses Seth's baseball games. Seth is also going to therapy, which is revealed during an argument with Justin.
The Big Race
During one race, Justin crashes and ends up in the hospital. He has a buildup of spinal fluid. Luckily, he gets a chance to race in the All American Soapbox Derby when another racer drops out.
On the way to the derby, Vic tells Justin about his daughter, Becca. She was also a soapbox racer but died in a swimming accident. Vic's wife passed away a year later. Seth helps Justin by convincing the Rules Committee to let him use his special handbrake. He contacts the media, which helps the brothers make up. In the end, Justin wins the tournament!
A Perfect Ending
In the final scene, Justin asks God if people are perfect when they go to Heaven. God shows him a vision of angels, some with wheelchairs and some without. Justin happily says, "Perfect."
At the end of the movie, real footage of Justin Yoder is shown as a tribute.
