Early Life and Marriage
Miranda Daphne Jane Smiley was born in 1939. Her father was Michael Smiley, a Major in the British Army. Their family lived at Castle Fraser in Scotland.
On 12 March 1963, Miranda married Benjamin Guinness. He was known as Viscount Elveden at the time. In 1967, he became the 3rd Earl of Iveagh. This meant Miranda became the Countess of Iveagh.
Her husband, Lord Iveagh, was the heir to the Guinness family's wealth. He led the Guinness brewing company for many years, from 1965 to 1995. In 1976, a special ship was built to carry Guinness beer. It was named "The Miranda Guinness" in her honor. In 1979, she was recognized as one of the world's best-dressed women.
Miranda and Benjamin had four children together: Edward, Rory, Emma, and Louisa. Miranda cared for her husband during his final illness in 1992.
Later Years and Restoration Work
After her husband passed away, the Countess bought Wilbury House. This was a large, historic mansion in Wiltshire, England. It is a Grade I listed building, meaning it is very important. She spent several years, from 1998 to 2004, carefully restoring the house.
In August 2010, Miranda celebrated her 70th birthday. She had a big party in Dublin, Ireland. Many members of the Guinness family and other important guests attended. The party was held at the Guinness Storehouse. This is a popular visitor center at the Guinness Brewery. The old family home, Iveagh House, was not available.
Passing Away
Lady Iveagh passed away in December 2010 at her home, Wilbury House. She was 70 years old and had been ill for some time. Her funeral service was held in London. She was buried next to her husband in the Guinness family crypt. This crypt is located at Elveden Hall in Suffolk, England.
