Mischocarpus is a group of about 19 different types of trees. These trees are part of the plant family called Sapindaceae. You can find them growing naturally in many places, from Australia and New Guinea all the way through Southeast Asia, China, and India.
In Australia, there are 11 known kinds of Mischocarpus trees. They grow in the rainforests along the eastern coast. You can see them from Newcastle in New South Wales, heading north through Queensland, up to the Cape York Peninsula.
Discovering Mischocarpus Trees
The name Mischocarpus was first officially published in 1825 by a scientist named Carl L. Blume. He also named the first type of tree in this group, which is called M. sundaicus.
Later, in 1879, another scientist named Ludwig A. T. Radlkofer officially named many more species within the Mischocarpus group. In 1977, R. W. J. M. van der Ham also helped update our understanding of this group of trees, adding new names for some species.
