Mississippi Choctaw Indian Federation facts for kids
The Mississippi Choctaw Indian Federation was a group of Choctaw people in Mississippi. It was like another government that worked alongside the main Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. This group no longer exists today.
The Federation did not want to be officially recognized by the United States government. They worried that if they became a federally recognized tribe, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) would have too much control over them. Even though they were not officially recognized, many people saw them as a real and important government for their community.

History of the Federation
When the Federation Started
The Mississippi Choctaw Indian Federation was created on September 27, 1934. This was a time when many Native American groups were making important decisions about their future.
Leaders and Rules
Reverend Ed Willis became the first leader, or chief, of the Federation. This group represented about 400 Choctaw people. They even had their own written set of rules, called a constitution, which helped them govern themselves.
Why the Federation Ended
The Federation stopped operating after its leaders moved to a different area or were placed under a different authority. This change meant the group could no longer continue as it had before.
