The Creative Journey of Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro

Starting Out: First Manga Series

Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro was born in Naha, Okinawa, Japan. He began his professional career as a manga artist in 1996. His first major work appeared in the popular magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump.

His first long-running story was Seikimatsu Leader den Takeshi!, which ran from 1997 to 2002. This comedy series was very successful. It earned him the Akatsuka Award for best new manga writers. In 2001, he also received the Shogakukan Manga Award for children's manga. These awards showed how much people enjoyed his early work.

Popular Manga: Toriko and Other Stories

After a short break, Shimabukuro returned to creating manga in 2004. He released a sports comedy series called Ring. This story was published in Super Jump magazine and lasted for three volumes. In 2005, he also brought back Seikimatsu Leader den Takeshi! for a short time in the same magazine.

In 2008, Shimabukuro started a new series in Weekly Shōnen Jump called Toriko. This adventure story quickly became a huge hit. It sold over 25 million copies and was nominated for the 2nd Manga Taishō award in 2009. Toriko was so popular that it was turned into an anime TV show. Toei Animation produced the anime, which aired from 2011 to 2014. The manga series itself concluded in November 2016.

Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro is good friends with Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece. In 2011, they worked together on a special crossover story. This one-shot comic, called Taste of the Devil Fruit, combined characters from Toriko and One Piece. Shimabukuro shared that he developed most of the story ideas, and Oda offered helpful suggestions.

Shimabukuro has also created several "one-shot" comics. These are short, complete stories that are not part of a longer series. In April 2017, he released Warai no Ōji Penpenpen and Chingiri. Later that year, he published Jijī 100% and Halftime in Grand Jump magazine.

In April 2018, he introduced another one-shot called Build King in Weekly Shonen Jump. This story later became a full series in the same magazine in November 2020. Shimabukuro also started using digital tools to create his manga around December 2020. The Build King series finished in April 2021. Its final printed book included extra content for readers.
