Mitte was a very important area right in the middle of Berlin. The word "Mitte" actually means "centre" in German! It was created in 1920 as part of a bigger plan to make Berlin a much larger city. Later, in 2001, Mitte joined up with two other areas, Wedding and Tiergarten, to form a new, larger district called Bezirk Mitte.

What Was Mitte?

Mitte was like the heart of Berlin. It was set up in 1920 when a project called "Groß-Berlin" (which means "Greater Berlin") made the city much bigger. This new, larger Berlin needed a clear way to organize its different parts, and Mitte became one of them.

For many years, Mitte was located in East Berlin. This meant it was on the side of the city that was controlled by the Soviet Union after World War II. Because of this, it held many of Berlin's most famous and historic places.

Famous Landmarks in Mitte

Mitte was home to some truly amazing sights. You could find the Pergamon Museum there, which is famous for its huge ancient buildings. The beautiful street called Unter den Linden was also in Mitte. This street is known for its lime trees and grand buildings.

One of the most famous landmarks in all of Germany, the Brandenburg Gate, was also located in Mitte. This gate is a symbol of peace and unity.

Joining Forces: A United Berlin

In 2001, something important happened. Mitte joined together with two other areas, Wedding and Tiergarten. These two areas had been part of West Berlin.

This joining of areas from both East and West Berlin was a big step. It helped to break down the idea of a divided city. By putting these important areas under one local government, it showed that Berlin was truly united again. This also made it easier to manage the city's important tourist spots.
