Mittie is a small, unincorporated community located in Allen Parish, Louisiana, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Mittie is found along Louisiana Highway 26. It is about 10.5 miles northwest of a town called Oberlin. This community has its own post office with the ZIP code 70654.
History of Mittie
Mittie was named after Mittie Burnett, who was the very first postmaster there. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.
The Moving Post Office
The post office in Mittie wasn't always in the same spot. It used to be on the east side of a creek called Whiskey Chitto. Later, a couple named Clinton Smith and Oma Simmons Smith moved the post office. They put it inside their store, which was called Smith's Grocery. Today, that store is known as Highway 26 Convenience. Mittie has been in its current location since 1929.
Whiskey Chitto Creek and the Log War
Whiskey Chitto Creek flows between the old and new locations of Mittie. This creek was important in a historical event called the Calcasieu Log War. This "war" happened between 1877 and 1879. During this time, government agents almost stopped all logging work along the streams in the area. Logging is the process of cutting down trees for wood.
