Miwa Nishikawa (西川美和, Nishikawa Miwa, born July 8, 1974) is a Japanese film director and screenwriter. This means she directs movies and writes the stories for them.
Nishikawa studied literature at the University of Waseda. She started her career by working with the famous director Hirokazu Kore-eda. Her first movie as a director, Wild Berries, was a big success and won an award for its screenplay. Besides making movies, Nishikawa has also written a novel called The Long Excuse.

Early Life and Career
While she was still in college, Nishikawa got her start in the movie business. She worked on the crew for Hirokazu Kore-eda's 1998 film After Life. After that, she worked as an assistant director on other films, including Kore-eda's 2001 movie Distance.
When Nishikawa was ready to direct her own first movie, Wild Berries, Kore-eda helped produce it. The film, released in 2003, earned her several "Best New Director" awards. She also won the "Best Screenplay" award at the Mainichi Film Concours.
Her second movie, Sway, came out in 2006. It was very popular and won "Best Film" at the 28th Yokohama Film Festival, where Nishikawa also won awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay. In 2009, she directed Dear Doctor, which was based on a novel she wrote. This film also won many awards, including "Best Film" at the 31st Yokohama Film Festival.
Nishikawa's 2012 film, Dreams for Sale, was shown at film festivals around the world. It tells the story of a young couple who get involved in a marriage scam.

Wild Berries (2003)
This was Nishikawa's first feature film. It is a drama and a comedy about a family that gets turned upside down. The family's life becomes chaotic when their son, Shuji, suddenly comes home after being away for a long time.
The story begins when the daughter, Tomoko, brings her fiancé home to meet her family. But things are not what they seem. The family's grandfather passes away, and at the funeral, Shuji appears. He has a lot of money and seems to solve the family's problems. But Tomoko is suspicious. She remembers Shuji talking about a secret patch of wild berries near their home. When she asks him to show her, a hike in the woods leads to a difficult situation that changes everything.
Sway (2006)
Nishikawa's second film is a mystery about two brothers. A successful photographer, Takeru Hayakawa, returns to his small hometown for his mother's funeral. He meets up with his quieter brother, Minoru, and a childhood friend, Chieko.
The three of them visit a place from their childhood, an old rope bridge over a gorge. An argument breaks out between the brothers. During the argument, Chieko falls from the bridge. Was it an accident, or was she pushed? The rest of the movie follows the court case, where a judge must decide which brother is telling the truth.
Dear Doctor (2009)
This film is about a doctor named Ino Osamu, who is the only doctor in a small village. Everyone in the village relies on him. A young medical student named Keisuke comes to the village to learn from Dr. Ino. Keisuke is impressed by how much Dr. Ino cares for his patients.
But one day, Dr. Ino disappears. As the police investigate, they discover that the doctor's past is a complete mystery. No one knows where he came from. The story tries to piece together the puzzle of the missing doctor.
The Long Excuse (2016)
This story is about a popular author named Kei Tsumura. His wife, Natsuko, dies in a bus accident while on a ski trip with her friend, Yuki. At the time of the accident, Kei was not being a good husband, and he feels very guilty.
Later, Kei meets Yoichi, the husband of his wife's friend Yuki, who also died in the crash. Kei starts helping Yoichi take care of his two young children. Through this new friendship, Kei begins to understand his own feelings of loss and what his marriage was really like. He eventually writes a book about his relationship with his wife.
Under the Open Sky (2021)
Under the Open Sky is another one of Nishikawa's films. It tells the story of a former criminal trying to fit back into society after being in prison for many years.
Writing Career
Besides making films, Miwa Nishikawa is also a successful author. She often turns her screenplays into novels.
Her script for Sway won a literature award, and she later published it as a book. Her 2009 book of short stories, Kinō no Kamisama (Gods of Yesterday), was nominated for the famous Naoki Prize. Her 2015 novel Nagai Iiwake (The Long Excuse) was also nominated for a major book award.
