The Mobile Museum of Art, also known as MMofA, is a large art museum in the city of Mobile, Alabama. It's a place where you can see amazing art from the United States, Europe, and other parts of the world.
Besides showing art, the museum is a busy community center. It hosts special events and programs for everyone, including movies, poetry readings, and dance shows. It also offers art classes for students of all ages who want to learn and create.

A Place for Art and Learning
The Mobile Museum of Art first opened its doors in 1963. It is the only accredited art museum in the southern part of Alabama. Being accredited means that it meets very high standards for how it cares for and displays its art.
The museum is located in Langan Park, a large park owned by the city. In 2002, the museum building was made three times bigger. It now has a huge collection of more than 6,400 works of art. These include paintings, sculptures, and beautiful handmade crafts.
What Can You See at the Museum?
The museum's collection is so big that it's displayed in several different galleries, or special rooms for showing art. Each gallery has a different theme.
Art from Around the World
- The Mary and Charles Rodning Gallery of Asian Art has art from Asia. You can see ancient bronze statues and pottery from China, as well as art made in the early 1900s.
- The Katharine C. Cochrane Gallery of American Art shows art from the United States. It features furniture, sculptures, and paintings, with some pieces dating back to 1770.
- The Maisel Gallery of European Art gives you a tour of art from Europe. It includes a wide variety of paintings, prints, and sculptures.
Special Exhibitions
The museum doesn't just show its own art. It also has a busy schedule of special exhibitions that change throughout the year. These shows might feature art from local artists in Alabama or famous artists from around the world.
One special part of the museum's collection is its contemporary glass art. A gift from Elise and Dr. J. Rhodes Haverty helped the museum build a collection of over 183 unique glass pieces from artists all over the world.
