The Model Brick Home is a special old house in Floreat, Western Australia. It was designed by H. Howard Bonner in 1932. His plans won a competition for the best design for a modern, affordable brick house. The house was then built in 1934 using land, materials, and even labour that were all given for free.

What Does the House Look Like?

The Model Brick Home is a single-story house made of brick and tile. It has a unique design that mixes old styles. These styles are called "Inter-War Old English" and "Tudor Revival." It also has some ideas from "Mediterranean Revival" buildings.

Special Features

The most interesting part of the house is its curved roof. This makes it stand out from other homes. Over the years, both the house and its gardens have been changed a lot. This means it doesn't look exactly like it did when it was first built.

How the House Came to Be

In the 1930s, many people were struggling because of the Great Depression. This was a time when jobs were hard to find and money was scarce. The building industry, like many others, was having a tough time.

A Competition to Help

To help the building industry, the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in Western Australia started a "Building Revival Campaign." They decided to hold a competition. They wanted to find the best designs for new, affordable homes. There was a competition for timber houses and another for brick houses.

Winning Design and Construction

H. Howard Bonner's design for a simple Old English style house won the brick house competition. After this, the campaign asked for donations. They needed land, building materials, and people to help build the houses for free.

Many people offered land. The Institute accepted two plots in a new area called Floreat Park, which is now Floreat. The Model Brick Home was built on one of these plots in 1934.

Why This House is Important

The Model Brick Home is important for a few reasons. It was one of the first houses built in Floreat. It's also one of the few houses from that time designed by an architect.

Floreat's Special Design

Floreat was one of the first suburbs in Perth planned using the "garden city movement" idea. This means the whole area was designed carefully. There were rules about how houses should be built and where they should sit on their land. For example, rules about how far back a house should be from the street. This made Floreat a very well-planned and attractive place to live.
