Mohammad Farhad (born July 5, 1938 – died October 9, 1987), often called "Comrade Farhad," was an important leader during Bangladesh's fight for independence. He led a special group of fighters and later became the head of the Communist Party of Bangladesh. He also served as a member of the Bangladesh Parliament.

Early Life and Education

Mohammad Farhad was born in a place called Khetripara in the Dinajpur area of what is now Bangladesh. His father was Ahmed Sadakatul Bari, and his mother was Tayabunnesa. He finished his high school studies at Dinajpur Zila School in 1953. Later, he earned a master's degree in political science from Dhaka University in 1961.

A Life in Politics

Comrade Farhad was very active in many important movements in Pakistan and later in Bangladesh. He was involved in the 1952 Bengali Language Movement, which fought for Bengali to be recognized as an official language. He also took part in the 1962 Education Movement and the big protests in Pakistan during 1968-69.

During the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, he played a key role. He helped lead the brave guerrilla forces, which were groups of fighters working together from the Communist Party, NAP, and Chhatra Union. These special forces fought against the Pakistani army to make Bangladesh free. Moni Singh, who was a former leader of the Communist Party, was also part of the government that led Bangladesh during the war.

Mohammad Farhad was put in prison several times for his political work, both when Bangladesh was part of Pakistan and later during the governments of Zia and Ershad in independent Bangladesh. In 1986, he was elected as a member of the Bangladesh Parliament from his home area of Panchagarh. He continued to serve in Parliament until he passed away.

His Passing

On October 8, 1987, Mohammad Farhad was on an official trip to Moscow, in the Soviet Union, representing the Bangladesh Parliament. Sadly, he had a sudden heart attack and died at the age of 49. He left behind his wife and two children. Today, there is a special place called the Moni Singh-Farhad Memorial Trust, named after him and Comrade Moni Singh. It serves as a center for thinkers and scholars in Bangladesh.
