The Jatiya Sangsad or National Assembly is the main law-making body of Bangladesh. Think of it as the country's big meeting place where important decisions are made. It's like the "voice of the people" in Bangladesh.
Currently, the Jatiya Sangsad has 345 members. These members are called Members of Parliament, or MPs for short. Forty-five of these seats are specially kept for women. People vote in elections to choose who will be their MP. These elections usually happen every five years. The last election was on December 29, 2008.
The political party that wins the most seats in the Jatiya Sangsad gets to choose the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The Prime Minister is the main leader of the government. The Jatiya Sangsad also chooses the President of Bangladesh. The President is the country's ceremonial head of state, which means they represent the country but don't usually run the government day-to-day.
The Jatiya Sangsad meets in a special building called the Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban in Dhaka. The Bangladesh Awami League is currently the party with the most members. To become an MP, a person must be a citizen of Bangladesh and at least 25 years old.
