Mohawk Village was first planned and settled in 1859. It was created to be a center for making coal oil. Coal oil was a type of fuel that was very important back then. People used it for things like lamps before electricity was common in homes.

The community got its name from a nearby stream. This stream is called Mohawk Run. So, the village was named after the water that flows close by.
