The Mahicans (also called Mohicans) are a Native American tribe. They first lived near the Hudson River in what is now New York State. Later, many Mahicans moved to Massachusetts after 1780. The remaining families then moved to northeastern Wisconsin in the 1820s and 1830s. The tribe called themselves Muhhekunneuw, which means "People of the River."

Who Are the Mahicans?

The Mahicans are an important group of Native American people. They have a long history in North America. Their original homeland was a large area. It stretched along the Hudson River Valley. This area is now part of New York State.

The Mahicans were known for living close to the river. This is why their name, Muhhekunneuw, means "People of the River." The river was very important to their way of life. It provided food, water, and a way to travel.

Where Did They Live?

The Mahicans lived in villages along the Hudson River. Their territory was vast. It included parts of what are now New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont. They built their homes near the river. This helped them with fishing and trade.

Over time, the Mahicans had to move. After 1780, many moved to Massachusetts. This was due to changes in the land. Later, in the 1820s and 1830s, the rest of the Mahicans moved again. They settled in northeastern Wisconsin. Today, many Mahican descendants live there.
