The black-winged monarch (Monarcha frater) is a cool type of bird that belongs to the Monarchidae family. It's known for its dark wings. You can find this bird living in Australia and on the large island of New Guinea. It likes to live in warm, wet forests, especially those in lowlands or on mountains.
About the Black-winged Monarch's Name
Sometimes, birds have many different names! The black-winged monarch is also called the black-chinned flycatcher, black-chinned monarch, or black-winged flycatcher. It's important not to confuse the 'black-chinned monarch' name with another bird called Symposiachrus boanensis.
Different Types of Black-winged Monarchs
Just like there are different types of dogs, there are also different types of black-winged monarchs! These are called subspecies. There are four main subspecies:
- M. f. frater: This type lives in the north-western part of New Guinea. It was first described by Philip Sclater in 1874.
- M. f. kunupi: You can find this subspecies in west-central New Guinea. Ernst Hartert and Knud Paludan described it in 1934.
- M. f. periophthalmicus: This one lives in central and south-eastern New Guinea. Richard Bowdler Sharpe first described it in 1882.
- Pearly monarch (M. f. canescens): This subspecies is also known as the pearly flycatcher. It lives on islands in the Torres Strait and in north-eastern Australia. Tommaso Salvadori described it in 1876.
