The Monardella arizonica is a special plant. It is also known as the Arizona monardella. This plant grows only in Arizona, United States. When a plant or animal lives only in one place, it is called endemic.
About the Arizona Monardella
This plant has unique flowers. They are shaped like tubes. The flowers have two "lips" and grow in bunches at the end of the stems.
Where it Grows
The Arizona monardella has been living in northern Arizona for a very long time. Scientists found its ancient pollen. This pollen was in the Waterman Mountains in Coconino County. This shows the plant has been there since the last Ice Age. Today, it still grows in areas with Pinyon-juniper woodland. These woodlands have lots of juniper and pinyon pine trees.
Growing This Plant
The Arizona monardella can handle cold weather. It does not like to be too wet in winter. Gardeners can grow new plants in different ways. They can use seeds from the plant. They can also take small pieces of the plant, called cuttings, in the summer. Another way is to divide a larger plant into smaller parts. This plant is good for gardens because it can handle dry conditions. It can also spread out and cover the ground.
