What is Money in the Bank?
The Money in the Bank match is exciting because the winner gets a special contract. This contract lets them challenge for a major championship whenever they want, for up to one year! This means they can surprise a champion who might be tired or hurt after another match. This is called "cashing in" the contract.
How the Match Works
In a Money in the Bank ladder match, wrestlers use ladders to try and reach the briefcase. The first person to climb the ladder, unhook the briefcase, and bring it down wins the contract. It's a very fast-paced and dangerous match!
History of the Match
The idea for the Money in the Bank match came from wrestler Chris Jericho in March 2005. He suggested it to Eric Bischoff, who was in charge of the Raw show at the time. Bischoff liked the idea and set up the first match for WrestleMania 21.
Edge won that first match. He held onto his contract until January 2006. Then, he surprised John Cena right after Cena had a tough match. Edge "cashed in" his contract and quickly defeated Cena to become the WWE Champion. This showed everyone how powerful the Money in the Bank contract could be!
Over the years, many wrestlers have won the briefcase. Some, like CM Punk, have won it more than once. The match became so popular that WWE created a whole event around it.
In 2017, for the first time, a women's Money in the Bank ladder match was held. Carmella won this historic match.

- Kane (2010): Kane holds the record for the fastest cash-in. He won the briefcase and then cashed it in on the very same night to win the World Heavyweight Championship!
- Seth Rollins (2015): Seth Rollins made history at WrestleMania 31. He cashed in his contract during the main event match between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. This turned it into a three-way match, and Rollins won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
- Carmella (2018): After winning the women's Money in the Bank contract, Carmella held it for 287 days, which is the longest time anyone has held the briefcase. She then successfully cashed in on Charlotte Flair to win the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship.
- Alexa Bliss (2018): Alexa Bliss won the women's briefcase and cashed in on the same night. She interrupted a match between Nia Jax and Ronda Rousey to win the WWE Raw Women's Championship.
