Moniack Castle

Moniack Castle is an old castle from the 1500s. It is located about 7 miles west of Inverness in Scotland. The castle was built in 1580 by members of the Clan Fraser. Today, it is a protected historic building.

A Look at Its Past

Moniack Castle has changed a lot since it was first built. It is an "L-plan" castle, meaning it looks like the letter L from above. In 1804, a special wall with gaps, called a crenellated parapet, was added to the top. The castle was made even bigger in the 1830s.

Inside the castle, there is a Roman Catholic chapel. On the castle grounds, you can also find the Balblair Stone. This is a very old stone carved by the Picts, who were ancient people of Scotland. The stone shows the figure of a man. It was moved to Moniack Castle in 1903 from a place called Kilmorack.

The Fraser Family Connection

Moniack Castle is special because it is the only castle still owned by a part of the Clan Fraser of Lovat. This group is known as the Moniack Frasers. They are the biggest branch of the clan. More than 250 people are descendants of Hon. Alastair Fraser and Lady Sybil.

Alastair received the castle in 1926 from his older brother, Simon Fraser, 14th Lord Lovat. Today, Rory Fraser and his family live in Moniack Castle.
