Her Career Journey
After graduating from Makerere University in 1978, Monica Azuba Ntege started working at Uganda Commercial Bank. In 2002, this bank was bought by Standard Bank of South Africa. Monica continued to work there, moving up to become the Facilities Manager at Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited. This meant she was in charge of managing the bank's buildings and equipment. From June 2014, she also served as a member of the board for the Uganda National Roads Authority. This organization is responsible for Uganda's roads. On 6 June 2016, she was chosen to be the Minister of Works and Transport.
Working as a Minister
When Monica Azuba Ntege became the Minister of Works and Transport, one of her first big jobs was to help bring back Uganda Airlines. This national airline had stopped flying in 2001 because it was not making enough money. However, in 2013, the government decided it was a good idea to restart the airline. The goal was to attract more tourists to Uganda. It also aimed to help with the growing number of people and goods traveling in and out of the country. This was especially important as Uganda's new petrochemical industry developed.
As minister, Monica led meetings with many important groups. These included representatives from the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Uganda Development Corporation, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Uganda. They all worked together to make plans and suggestions. These ideas were then sent to the government's main decision-making body for final approval.
