Monika Werner (born March 10, 1938 – died March 21, 2024) was a German politician. She was a member of the State Council of East Germany, which was like the country's main leadership group, from 1986 to 1990.

Monika Werner was born in Markranstädt, a town near Leipzig, Germany. Her family was a working-class family, meaning her parents worked in jobs that earned wages.

She completed her Abitur, which is a special exam in Germany that allows students to go to university. After that, she studied at the HfÖ Berlin [de], a university in Berlin that focused on economics. In 1960, she earned a diploma in economics. This means she became an expert in how money, goods, and services are produced and used.

Career and Political Journey

After finishing her studies, Monika Werner worked as an economist. She also became a manager at a large factory called VEB Lokomotivbau-Elektrotechnische Werke "Hans Beimler" in Hennigsdorf. This factory built locomotives (train engines) and electrical equipment.

Monika Werner was very active in politics from a young age.

  • She was a leader in the Free German Youth, a youth organization in East Germany.
  • In 1958, she joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). This was the main political party in East Germany.
  • In 1960, she also joined the Free German Trade Union Federation, which was a group that represented workers' rights.

From 1963 to 1989, Monika Werner was a member of the Volkskammer. This was the parliament, or main law-making body, of East Germany. In the Volkskammer, she worked on committees that dealt with money (finance) and social issues, like welfare and public services. Later, she also became a member of the Staatsrat (State Council).

From 1974 to 1990, Monika Werner served as the mayor of Hennigsdorf. This meant she was the main leader of the city government.

Later Life

Monika Werner received an award called the Patriotic Order of Merit for her service to the country. In 1990, she decided to leave politics. After that, she started working in the real estate business, which involves buying, selling, or renting properties.

Monika Werner passed away on March 21, 2024, in a seniors' home in Hennigsdorf.
