About Monique Mojica
Monique Mojica comes from a family of theatre artists. Her mother, Gloria Miguel, and her aunts, Muriel Miguel and Lisa Mayo, started a famous group called Spiderwoman Theater. Monique began learning about acting and theatre when she was only three years old. She continues many of the storytelling and theatre traditions seen in Spiderwoman's work.
Monique has a diverse background. She is from the Guna and Rappahannock Indigenous groups. She also has Jewish family roots. Monique often explores her mixed heritage in her plays and performances.
Monique's Career in Theatre
Monique Mojica has written many well-known plays. Some of her most famous works include Princess Pocahontas and the Blue Spots, Birdwoman and the Suffragettes, and Chocolate Woman Dreams the Milkyway. She has also worked with Floyd Favel on projects. These projects focus on Indigenous performance culture.
From 1983 to 1985, Monique was the artistic director of Native Earth Performing Arts. This is Canada's oldest professional Indigenous theatre company. Today, she is the artistic director of the Chocolate Woman Collective.
Monique also helped create the Turtle Gals Performance Ensemble. She started this group with Jani Lauzon and Michelle St. John. This ensemble created plays like The Scrubbing Project and The Triple Truth.
Monique Mojica is also a co-editor of a book called Staging Coyote's Dream: An Anthology of First Nations Drama in English. She worked on this book with Ric Knowles. She was nominated for an award for best supporting actress. This was for her role in the movie Smoke Signals.
In 2019, Monique helped launch the Indigenous Theatre at Canada's National Arts Centre. She performed in their very first show. This play was called The Unnatural and Accidental Women. It was written by Metis-Dene playwright Marie Clements.
