The Monmouth War Memorial is a special monument. It helps us remember the people from Monmouth who bravely fought. They gave their lives in the First World War (1914–1918) and the Second World War (1939–1945). This memorial stands as a tribute to their sacrifice.
Where is the Monmouth War Memorial?
The Monmouth War Memorial is in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. You can find it right in the middle of St. James' Square. It is in the roundabout where Whitecross Street, Old Dixton Road, and St. James' Street meet.
Behind the memorial is a large tree called a Catalpa tree. This tree came from North America. It was planted around the year 1900. When the memorial was first shown to the public in 1921, the Catalpa tree was already very big. There are also nice plants around three sides of the memorial. Railings surround the monument, the plants, and the nearby grass.
What does the Monmouth War Memorial look like?
The Monmouth War Memorial was made by a sculptor named W. Clarke. He was from Llandaff. The monument has three steps at its base. On top of these steps is a tall column. A statue of a soldier stands proudly on top of the column.
The column has several metal plaques. Two of these plaques are on the front. The smaller plaque at the top tells us that the monument remembers people from Monmouth. It honors those who died in both World War I and World War II. It says: "To the memory of the Monmouth men who fell in the wars 1914–1918 1939–1945."
The larger plaque below it lists the names of the soldiers. These are the brave people from Monmouth who died in the Second World War, from 1939 to 1945.
