The Monroe Street School is a special historic building in Salisbury, North Carolina. It has also been known as J.C. Price High School and the S.E. Duncan Education Center. This three-story building is made of red brick and was built in 1923. It has a grand and classic look, known as the Classical Revival style.
This school was very important because it was the only public school for African-American students in Salisbury for many years. It helped educate many young people during a time when schools were separated by race.
A School with a Story
The Monroe Street School has seen many changes over the years. In 1941, a fire caused damage to the building, but it was quickly rebuilt. Later, in 1960, a cafeteria was added so students could enjoy meals at school.
The school's name also changed a few times. It was first called J.C. Price High School. However, in 1931, a new school was built and given that name. So, this building became known as the Monroe Street School.
Honoring History
Because of its important role in education and its unique architecture, the Monroe Street School was recognized as a historic place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. This list includes buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history. Being on this list helps protect the building and reminds everyone of its past significance.
